Layered Paintings

Materials:
- Canvas
- Acrylic Paint
- Gesso
- Paper Mache
- Newspaper
- Cardboard
- Glue
- Scissors
- Paintbrushes
- Picture Reference (Optional)
- Pencil
- Plain White Printer Paper

1. Draw on canvas using either a reference and the grid method or using your own loverly image.

2. Determine which area of your image you want to be layered. Using white printer paper, trace that area to make a template. Depending on how large that area is, you may need to use more than one sheet.

3. Trace onto cardboard and cut out. Repeat if you want to do more than one area or if you want to do more than one layer.

4. Glue onto canvas. For this example, I did a layer for the body and a layer for the head.

5. Paper mache just the cardboard area and make sure to get a tiny bit over the edge onto the canvas so that the corrugated part is covered.

6. Gesso the paper mached part.

7. Paint!
