Mondrian Compositions

Materials:
- Pre-cut 1" black strips
- 18" x 24" White Drawing Paper
- Red, Yellow, Blue Tempera Paint
- Glue/ Gluesticks
- Scissors
- Paintbrushes
- Cups for Water
- Mondrian and De Stijl examples

A simple project I whip out every now and then - disucss Mondrian and the de stijl art movement. Ask students what they see and what is similar in his paintings.

Students will create their own compositions using the black strips. Emphasize that Mondrian made squares and rectangles and did not use diagonal lines. Paint in select boxes and leave at least one white. Reteach how to wash a paintbrush off clean before switching to a new color. I actually asked the students to paint with the yellow first, then red and last blue.
